Are you getting antsy to get your hands on the newest issue of IronWorks? Well the wait is almost over. In just a few more days the July 2012 issue will start appearing on magazine racks everywhere. Inside the beat of great looking bikes rolls on starting with Steve Iancona’s “Challenger”. This board tracker inspired bike raced its way to 2nd Place at the AMD World Championship after started out as a humble 883 Sporty. Following that is a classic looking Panhead built by Kurt Morrow for Rusty Cochran. This is how they used to build them complete with a mousetrap, way cool! Next up is a Softail that was given the Indian Larry twisted treatment. The frame that is, along with the dished gas tank. The next bike sort of gives me flashbacks to the early 70’s with its high sissy bar, raked frame and long forks. Claes Lindblom rides this long old Panhead chopper during the short Scandinavian summers. Our next featured bike is a direct contrast to Claes’ bike. George Colvin’s “Touch Of Class” was built by Gilliland Customs starting with an 883 Hugger. The Hugger name is about the only thing that hasn’t been changed. Speaking of change, the next bike started as a ’78 Shovelhead and wound up as a radical bobber at the hands of the “69 Garage in Tuscany, Italy. This ride is some spicy meat-a-ball! Of course Margie Siegal brings us our last featured bike in her “Seasoned Citizens”. This issue it’s a 1949 WR. Yes, back in the old days before Sportsters, Buells and V-Rods, H-D was big into racing with these Flathead 45ci equipped bikes.

Our first feature story has Marilyn Stemp searching out Daytona the way it used to be. Believe it or not there was a time when there weren’t any of the mega-destination spots that Daytona has now. It was a more innocent (?) place and time. The next story tells the tale of the resurrection of a legendary racing machine. “Lucifer’s Hammer” has been lovingly brought back to life by the folks at Tilley H-D in Statesville, North Carolina. What a cool bike and great story. Of course if you buy the magazine to read it instead of looking at the pictures you have to check out the words of wisdom by Marilyn, Bert Baker, Rick Fairless, Ed Youngblood and myself. Plus you can read what other people think in the “Letters” section. Hey! Don’t forget to look at a new feature we call “Made In The USA”. From time to time we will be featuring facilities that can proudly proclaim their products are Made In The USA! This issue its Hawg Halters Inc.

OK now its time for some real nuts and bolts out in the IW Garage. First up is Wimmer Custom Cycle’s answer for hard starting bikes. They’ve taken an old idea and refined it so so you don’t have to worry about hurting your engine when it doesn’t want to crank over. T-Man Performance then tells us what should happen when you do have to tear a motor apart and put it back together. While you’ve got the bike apart you might be thinking of getting some custom parts fabricated. Frederick Fortune has some things you should think about before you start the project. After you get it back together you might need some new skins for the old machine. Avon Tyres gives some tips on what tire you might want to put on it. Now of course you want to keep the bike running strong so the folks at S&S gives out some advice on how to get more power and speed from the old Hog. Then our friends from Chicago H-D give the lowdown on how they answer the age old question, “Where’s the beef?” They tell us how they beef up an engine. Now you can’t leave the IW Garage without looking at the IW Buyers Guide for those goodies you’ve been dreaming of, can you? When you do don’t forget to take a look at the IW Eye. This issue it features a true living legend.

OK, now you’ve got an idea of what’s coming. But if you subscribed to IronWorks you’d already have a copy. Its quicker and cheaper than waiting to buy it at a news stand. Even if you’re not computer savvy its easy, all you have to do is click on the SUBSCRIBE button on the home page.

Here’s an event those of us who love vintage motorcycles must put on their “to do” list. It’s the Vintage Rally 2012 at the National Motorcycle Museum in Anamosa, Iowa. A whole weekend of activities is planned with a Bike Show on Saturday, June 2. Not only will some great show bikes be on display but Ray Price Harley-Davidson Racing will park their 83 foot state-of-the-art race rig along with the team’s two fresh top fuel bikes. Then at 3:45 on Saturday any drag bike owner in the area is invited to fire up their machine and rattle the Museum’s windows. If you want to get away from the noise you can stroll through the huge Swap Meet to check out the old parts.

Things get started early Sunday morning with a bike ride through the rolling hills of central eastern Iowa. The ride is free, roads are great and bikes 1986 and earlier are welcome! Bikes will meet at the National Motorcycle Museum at 9:00am, the riders’ meeting is at 9:45 and riders depart at 10 am. The rides free and for just $10 you can sign up for nice lunch in the Museum Banquet Hall just after the Sunday Ride. The event continues Sunday afternoon with the 63rd annual Anamosa Hillclimb and Swap Meet. There will be a special competition class for antique and vintage hillclimbers. “Hillclimbing is just a great old sport. There’s really nothing else like it in motorsports, period,” Says National Motorcycle Museum President, John Parham. “I’m sure a little prize money will help get out some of the old iron and add to the show, offer a live, thrilling history lesson. Anyone out there with an old hillclimber I hope will bring it to the Vintage Rally and Anamosa Hillclimb, even just to show it.” Of course most of the bikes are thrilling, quick, high tech modern machines. But the National Motorcycle Museum and J&P Cycles are sponsoring the $500 purse for the Vintage Class at the Anamosa Hillclimb.

While you’re there don’t forget to step inside the Museum where there over 400 motorcycles and great memorabilia. On hand as well will be famed Daytona Beach Racers, Dick Klamfoth, Bobbie Hill and Bill Tuman. Tom Reiser will be on hand to talk about his V8 bike and be part of a drag racing panel discussion. John Gregory, the double engined Norton, HOGSLAYER’s chief wrench will also be there. Also on hand is EJ Potter’s (the Michigan Madman) first bike, Bloody Mary. If you’ve thought about investing in antique bikes you can sit in on the Directions in Motorcycle Collecting Panel Discussion and listen to experts like Randy Baxter (Baxter Cycle) and Jim Long (expert antique Harley restorer) tell you what they know, and don’t know, about the really very interesting world of motorcycle collecting.

We’ve all been there. Sitting on our bike alongside the road waiting for the guy wearing the Smokey Bear hat in the car behind us with the red light flashing to finish writing our ticket. As we sit and wait we start wondering, “How much is this going to cost me?” And I’m not talking about the fine, the court costs and other fees they add on to the ticket they give you. No, we’re worried about how much our insurance rates are going to go up.

Well now there’s a way you can get a ballpark estimate. Insurance.com’s new interactive “Uh-Oh! Calculator” allows you to compute the average percentage increase to your auto insurance rate for the 14 most common violations. Insurance.com analyzed more than 490,000 auto insurance quotes given to drivers after receiving a ticket. Here’s the averages:

Reckless driving: 22%
DUI first offense: 19%
Driving without a license or permit: 18%
Careless driving: 16%
Speeding 30 mph over the limit: 15%
Failure to stop: 15%
Improper turn: 14%
Improper passing: 14%
Following too close/tailgating: 13%
Speeding 15 to 29 mph over limit: 12%
Speeding 1 to 14 mph over limit: 11%
Failure to yield: 9%
No car insurance: 6% (?)
Seat belt infractions: 3%

Now, if you want to get a better idea of how lighter your wallet is going to be you can enter your age, type of dwelling, what state you live in, your marital status and how long you’ve been with your car insurance company into the “Uh-Oh! Calculator” to find out. It’ll also tell you how many points you’ll get plus any other penalties levied under state laws. The “Uh-Oh! Calculator” is located at: www.insurance.com .

While the content of this site is generally considered “Harley” only, we do occasionally have posts about other brands of motorcycles and forms of motorcycling. This is 1 of those posts.

It is an ‘Infographic’ from Motocross Gear and it shows the technical aspect of how to make turns. Something all riders should know how to do. “Motocross – The Science of Corners” can be viewed at: www.motocrossgear.com/blog/riding-technique/choosing-the-right-line-the-science-of-corners/ .

Now, not all of it is applicable to street riding but there’s some real good info that does apply to all riders. Check the site out, that way if you’re going down the highway and you go into a turn you don’t wind up having to accidentally start motocrossing.

Steve Iacona set out to build his entry to the 2011 AMD World Championships with his own two hands, and we’re not talking about the hands you use to open parts books and swipe plastic. “The more difficult the idea, the more I wanted to do it,” said Steve, whose craft and attention to detail are more than evident on this issue’s cover bike. Be sure to take a minute or ten to appreciate the touches that won this bike first place in the IMS Ultimate Builder U.S. Championships in Daytona.

Back in the old days when a person was lost they had to sort through folding maps or a cumbersome road atlas to find places. Or as a last resort if you are a man, ask directions. Now-a-days its not hard to find out where you are or where you’re going. All you have to do is get on the computer, go to Map Quest and type in the address you’re trying to find. And most cell phones now have GPS mapping on them, but sometimes a person does have to go the old way and ask directions.

I may get in trouble for telling this but I got a call early one Saturday morning from my sister asking if I knew where a local street was. It seems she and a girl she works with were planning on day full of garage sale hunting. They had heard of a large garage sale on Cedar Drive but neither knew where exactly it was so they had called me to see if I knew.

I told her I did and asked her where they were. She said they were still at her friend Diane’s house. I sort of chuckled and said, “Well, go to the end of Diane’s driveway, turn right onto the highway, go about a hundred yards and then make another right and you’ll be on Cedar Drive.” You can see the Cedar Drive sign from Diane’s mail box.

At first there was a moment of silence on the other end and then I heard my sister’s distinctive laugh as he told Diane where Cedar Drive was and then I could hear both girls laughing hysterically. Now I know both of them are very intelligent and my sister has an excellent sense of direction, so I chalked it up to both having temporary brain lock in anticipation of a morning looking through other people’s trash, I mean treasures.

Of course I never bring the incident up. No. not me.

Just a reminder that the 2nd Annual Knuckle Shuffle (IW Blogger “Second Annual Knuckle Shuffle“, 08 Dec 2011) will be held the first weekend of June in Yuba, Wisconsin. It all starts on Friday, June 1st, when folks start showing up and getting ready for the main event. On Saturday, June 2nd, 4 rides from 4 different locations in Minnesota, Iowa, and Wisconsin will converge in Yuba. There will be a street party in front of the Full Throttle Bar with bands, burnouts and lots fun. Also on Saturday evening there will be a drawing for a special limited edition Anders Nygren signature KN-Series engine by Flathead Power (FHP) engine. On Sunday those who registered (and are still standing) can take a tour of the S&S manufacturing facility in nearby Viola, Wisconsin.

The purpose of the Knuckle Shuffle is to help raise money to support Kevin “Teach” Baas’ Kennedy High School Chopper Class. Each year the kids in this class build a custom motorcycle. Even with all the help from the motorcycle industry they need funds to ease the financial burden on the chopper class. Just remember that the future of motorcycling is in the hands of kids like those in this class. Last year they donated over $3,300 and would like to double that this year. In the future there are plans to be able to donate to more schools. You can help by going on this ride. All bikes are welcome especially the vintage iron. Just remember to pack your sleeping bag and tent for a weekend of fun. For more info visit: www.theknuckleshuffle.com , or go to their Facebook page: www.facebook.com/TheKnuckleShuffle .

By now you’ve heard of the feel good story about the 2004 Harley Night Train that was swept out to sea after last year’s devastating March 11, 2011, earthquake and tsunami in Japan. IW post “Harley Night Train Washes Up On Canadian Beach”, 01 May 2012. The bike somehow managed to make it the whole way across the stormy northern Pacific Ocean inside the Styrofoam lines container the owner was using to store it in and was found on a remote island beach in British Columbia, Canada. The beachcomber who found it contacted Canadian authorities who had Japanese officials trace the license plate to find the owner and see if he was still alive. Indeed the owner, 29 year old Ikuo Yokoyama, had survived the catastrophy. However during the tsunami Yokoyama lost 3 members of his family and his house besides his beloved Harley.

The long strange trip of the bike continues. After being discovered and the owner found the bike has since traveled by boat and a pick up truck to the Steve Drane Harley-Davidson dealership in Victoria, British Columbia. Mechanics there are prepping the bike for shipment back to Japan where Harley-Davidson Japan plans to restore the bike at no cost before returning it to Mr. Yokoyama.

So far all involved have truly made this a feel good story. The man who found it and instead of keeping it or selling it for scrap contacted the local authorities. Those officials then took the effort to find the rightful owner in a far away land. Volunteers then transported the bike from the remote beach to a port where a boat hauled it down the coast to Victoria Island where a Harley enthusiast volunteered to haul the bike to Victoria, a round trip of nearly 2000 miles. Now the bike is getting ready for its voyage back across the Pacific where Harley will rebuild the bike and then return it to the owner. Kudos to all involved!

But there is a murky side to this story. Has anybody else noticed that when the original story broke the beachcomber was reportedly to have said he found the bike in the back of the container. First images of the bike did show it in the container. The fact that the bike made it some 4000 miles across an ocean intact was amazing in itself. But to be still standing in the container is well… A few days after the original story broke another photograph appeared apparently showing the same bike half buried in the sand on the beach. It has also recently been reported that the beachcomber who made the find has said that he used a winch on his ATV to pull the bike out of its gooey resting place. Which s the real story?

In reality it doesn’t matter except maybe to the people who will be vying for the rights when the story will be made into a movie. Hopefully when the movie does come out Hollywood will do right by the bike’s owner and all the people who so far have done right in the recovery and return of the bike.
