Story by Ken Conti Photographs compliments of Precision Billet Products
If you’re a Harley rider and a regular reader of IronWorks, you may have seen some of the handiwork from David Shano’s team. Precision Billet Products, founded in 1996, is based on the idea of giving riders an easy, affordable way to customize their bikes with products made in the U.S.
With several lines of limited-edition accessories for Harley-Davidson motorcycles, the Precision Billet team gives a number of options to riders looking to bring a boutique, artisan touch to their rides.
“Our parts allow riders to give their bikes a customized look that suits their personality and appeals to their design preferences,” notes Shano. “It also gives dealers a way to customize bikes on the showroom floor to give each bike a unique look and added value, and we’re finding more interest from custom bike builders, too.”
Shano notes that he sources everything he can domestically, and that doing things in-house gives the company control over a lot of variables. “It lets us design, create and test our own prototypes, set and maintain exacting quality-control standards and create some really interesting, intricate designs,” he said. “We’re also able to put local, skilled laborers to work. The people we employ are the same type of people that we sell to—they work, they ride. That gives us great insight into the market and our end users. Doing things right, and doing them domestically, is important to us, our employees, and our customers.”
Precision Billet parts feature distinctive 3-D designs custom crafted from 6061 T6 aluminum. The company periodically introduces new designs in limited editions of 2500. A family of 10 or more different parts is offered for each limited edition design. Parts can be purchased as a set or individually. New parts are occasionally introduced for specific design families.
The company’s seven current editions include:
● Fleur, featuring a stylized fleur-de-lis
● Aces Wild, featuring the spade symbol
with hints of flame
● Afterlife, a 3-D skull air cleaner
● Assassin, inspired by 15th century
weapons, with red or black carbon fiber inserts
● Exotic, individually hand crafted using
exotic natural materials
● Grand Prix, sleek and sophisticated,
with red or black carbon fiber inserts
● Darkside, with a medieval look inspired
by 16th century symbolism
Available parts include ignition switch covers, air cleaners, points covers, derby covers, brake levers, heel/toe shifters, shift linkages, floor boards, passenger floor boards, front and rear brake master cylinder covers, gas tank inserts, bag latches, tank badges, mirrors, and fuel doors.
But as a visit to their 7,000-square-foot Gilbert, Arizona manufacturing facility or their website quickly demonstrates, these guys have taken crafting and creativity to a whole new level, and to a wide range of applications. Just take a look at their five different brands and product lines, each featuring a selection of precision-machined accessories to take your ride, whatever it is, to an entirely new place.
In addition to their Harley-Davidson accessory lines, the Shanos have four other businesses. SpinTek Wheelchair Accessories crafts aluminum billet wheelchair wheels, along with related items. Wake Designs manufactures a variety of wakeboarding accessories, including wakeboard towers for boats. Todd’s Custom Billet UTV Accessories brings custom looks and added functionality to off-road utility terrain vehicles. Finally, LUX Motorsports Motocross Accessories makes custom rear sprockets, master cylinder covers and a kickstand replacement.
And as if that isn’t enough they also own an electronics manufacturing company, and
design high-end jewelry and timepieces. So, no matter what brand of fun you like to have Precision Billet has what you need to make your experience cooler and more personal. And it’s all made right in
Arizona, USA.
