Grab a Good ReadAs proponents of the printed word, we’re inclined to think that books make great gifts—anytime. But when winter weather keeps you from riding they can provide vicarious fun without suffering wet feet and frozen fingers. Here are some notable titles we recently enjoyed. If you’d rather wrench than read consider cracking the cover of Motorbooks’ Idea Book of Custom Motorcycles with photos by Michael Lichter and commentary by Howard Kelly (www.motorbooks.com) or How to Repair Plastic Bodywork from the Whitehorse Tech Series (800-531-1133, www.whitehorsepress.com). Those lucky enough to have a Panhead in the garage could use a copy of Wolfgang’s H-D Panhead Restoration (651-275-0198, www.wolfpub.com). If you’re thinking of buying or selling a vintage bike, the Comprehensive Vintage Motorcycle Price Guide can help. Other practical thinkers will appreciate the second edition of Motorcycle Camping Made Easy. More contemplative types will appreciate The Ride So Far: Tales From A Motorcycling Life by Lance Oliver for its snippets of real life riding we can all relate to. These last three titles are from Whitehorse Press. Another heady read is The Upper Half of the Motorcycle, a provocative look at the unity of rider and machine, also published by Whitehorse. If it’s the people in motorcycling that intrigue you, take a look at Indian Larry: Chopper Shaman. And Dave Nichols probes the heart of the biker rebel in One Percenter, The Legend of the Outlaw Bikers. Both are from Motorbooks. For the other side of the coin turn to Edward Winterhalder’s Biker Chicks featuring personal stories of women riders (www.allenandunwin.com). Whether you’re a Mod or a Rocker, ACE TIMES, Speed thrills and tea spills, a cafe and a culture by Mick Duckworth relates the definitive history of London’s iconic Ace Café (www.ace-cafe-london.com). And if you’re after some fuel for daydreaming until spring comes along, while away some hours in the pages of Harley-Davidson Museum Masterpieces by Dain Gingerelli with photos by Randy Leffingwell. No, it’s not a trip down the aisles of the MoCo’s new archives, but it’s the next best thing. |
