Question Of The Month: 2009 Motorcycle Purchase
As is the custom since we started this blog on the first of every month we give you a list or ask you a question. Now due to the current economic situation this seems like an appropriate multi-part question to ask you on April Fool’s Day.
Were you considering buying a new motorcycle this year? With bank credit tight and loans for large purchases hard to obtain (even though banks have been getting billions to help with this situation), are you still in the market? Or are you planning on waiting to see if prices will come down? If you do buy the motorcycle will you accessorize it less than you had planned or the same? Will the incentive of tax credits sway your decision? Finally, what brand and model bike are/were you planning on buying?

Personally, as a business owner and builder I think prices are as low as you are going to see them go. If in doubt, contact your builder ask for a quote. With the tax incentive, low costs (I believe we builders and dealers have slashed prices as much as we can) – This is probably the best time for you to buy, before this low economy starts to turn around and prices start to rise again. Just like with car purchase / appliances / etc. – low economic times are the best time to buy because you’ll find the best prices on any major purchase. Only problem that people face is if they don’t have the money saved, they may have a hard time getting a loan, but if they do qualify – You’ll probably get the best rate. Just my 2 cents.

I don’t plan on buying for another few years. People seem to be holding on to their money right now in case that rainy day comes. Incentives or not, you have to look at feeding the kids right now and in the near future.

Are you kidding me? Yeah I know this was posed on April Fools…
I haven’t bought anything on credit in over 20 years. If I don’t have the cash I don’t need it. So I guess that should answer if I’m gonna buy a NEW bike…
NOPE…
I have no credit…it don’t suck…I just don’t have any. At my age, that’s rare, but I like things this way. I’ve always held as my motto.
“IF YA CAN’T CARRY IT ON YOUR BIKE, YOU DON’T NEED IT”
So…there’s my credit…here’s my bike, and I’ll buy a bigger one when the money comes…until then, I’ll just ride my trusty old girl…and keep fixing her when she gets hurt or needs a little replacement on a worn out part.

As much as I would like to buy a new/used bike, my economic status says “no way”. Not only has my portfoilio taken a huge hit, but seriously high taxes on some transactions have come due. Thus, I am seriously in the hole this year. And my state/county is looking to raise my property taxes by more than the usual clip. Thus, my escrow will be significantly short too.
Noteably, the local gendiarmes from the state down to the little municipalities are stepping up enforcement to make up for civic budget shortfalls. We won’t bother going into the civic budget waste habits.
There is one bright spot. Lots of people are getting money from the govt. So, even if I don’t survive, the species will continue.
I’m seriously considering new bike and I don’t think credit’s a problem, but I’m not sure I’ll even have a job in 6 months. My plan is to sell off 2 bikes I don’t ride and pay cash for a new bike, stock with no accessories since you can buy everything cheaper aftermarket. Bike of choice right now is a V-star 1300 but a Vulcan 2000 is not out of the question. Anything I buy is probably going to get chopped and redone and the Metrics make a lot cheaper starting point if you’re planning keeping the bike.
