Pittsburgh Motorcycle Cops Celebrate

On Friday, June 26th a bunch of current and former Motorcycle Patrolmen from the Pittsburgh Bureau of AP photoPolice gathered for a special celebration. This marks the 100th year of the Pittsburgh Motorcycle Unit. The unit was formed in 1909 with the purchase of 5 Harley-Davidson motorcycles. They showed what they could do that first year by patrolling the streets during a street car strike and the 1909 World Series. They also may have given William Howard Taft the first Presidential motorcycle escort that year.

celebrating 100, TribCurrently there are over two dozen members of the Motorcycle Unit including one member who is the third generation of his family to ride in it. The current Pittsburgh Chief-of-Police is a former member of the unit. Congratulations to the Pittsburgh Police Motorcycle Unit for serving and protecting the city on their Harleys for 100 years. Pittsburgh has used Harley-Davidson Police Motorcycles for every one of those 100 years which may be a record.
