Not only was this Harley-Davidson’s 105th Anniversary but it was also the 100th anniversary of theĀ motorcycle cop. In order to help control the burgeoning number of automobiles on the country’s city streets and back roads, law enforcement officials turned to the economical nimble motorcycle to do the job. Detroit, where my cousin Tommy was a motorcycle officer, took delivery of the first Police equipped motorcycle in 1908, but Pittsburgh claims to have had the first full time motorcycle officer.
As part of it’s 105th Anniversary H-D held a Police Motorcycle Skills Competition. Over 100 officers from the United States, Canada and France competed in the event. The Jacksonville Sheriffs Office will receive a 2008 Police Edition Road King because Officer David Sciandra turned out to be the “Top Cop” at the event. They can also be proud that fellow officer Kurt Brown placed 4th. Sciandra is a 6 year veteran of the 17 man unit.
We at IronWorks salute all the officers who participated in the event and all the others who “Protect and Serve” their communities from the seat of their motorcycles. Look for more coverage of this event in the December issue of IronWorks magazine.

I have family in law enforcement. We should all be greatful for their courage. Every day they are out there putting their lives on the line so we can live ours in peace. They get a bad rap when they pull you over for a traffic violation or something stupid like not wearing your helmet or an expired tag. But more times than not, they are out there making our lives better, and they do it all for pennies.

This is great information. Never heard about the top cop competition as part of the 105th HD celebration. The Saturday parade in Milwaukee was really something to see!
