September’s List: Top 10 Favorite Roads

  1. PA 555 & PA 120 from Weedville, Pennsylvania to Lock Haven, Pennsylvania. Lots of curves around hills and along streams, Watch for deer, bears, turkeys and elk. Another good starting point is the Straub Brewery in St. Marys,  Pennsylvania on PA 120.
  2. The Cabot Trail around northern Nova Scotia, Canada. Cliffs, forests, moose, eagles and sea side scenes are the scenery. REAL fish and chips. Take lots of money, it costs more now.
  3. Utah 128 from Interstate 70 to US 191 to US 160. The roads go through the high desert and along the Colorado River. Moab, Utah is a good place to take a break.
  4. California 178 from US 395 to CA 99. Out of the desert over and through the mountains along the Kern River. Some roads in the mountains had no guard rails.
  5. California 198, The “Generals Highway”. Up over the mountains into the land of the giant trees. Awesome, awesome scenery! Only complaint was getting behind an RV going up the mountain.
  6. US 212 from Red Lodge, Montana over Beartooth Pass to Tower Junction, Wyoming and then take the Grand Loop Road through Yellowstone Park. Lots of mountains, lakes, rivers, geysers and wild critters.
  7. US 14A through Spearfish Canyon, South Dakota. If you want to see sheer roadside cliffs here they are. Go to Mount Rushmore and Devil’s Tower but ride through Spearfish Canyon.
  8. US 441 from Gatlinburg, Tennessee to Cherokee, North Carolina. a beautiful ride through the tree covered Smokie Mountains. The road used to have a loop on it. Watch for bear and deer.
  9. PA 74 from US 22 to the city of Carlisle, PA. A great short ride over the Allegheny Mountains with a couple switchbacks. One of my favorite routes to Bikefest at Carlisle.
  10. Lombard Street, San Fransisco, California. The curviest street in the world. Getting there is a pain but Frisco is a great place to visit if you like Victorian architecture, good food and great wine.

Well there’s ten of the most favorite routes I’ve ridden. I haven’t been on some of them for awhile so they may have changed. Except for Lombard Street make sure your gas tank is full and the batteries in your camera are fresh. How about sharing some of your favorites.

  1. There are some great places to ride around Harrison, Va. I’ll take a look at a map and get you some of my highlighted routes. I know hwy. 33 is somewhere in there.

  2. You dont have to go all the way to Frisco to ride a short but curvy street. There is Snake Alley in Burlington Iowa. With a moniker like “Snakebit”, I am amayonaised that Sam hasn’t heard of it. The folks in Burlington note that the Army Corps of Engineers think that it is more curvy and/or has more elevation than Frisco’s Lombard Street. Search: Snake Alley, Burlington Iowa

At one time, Lombard Street was two-way. Today it is one-way downhill. Bill Cosby did a comedy routine about driving up Lombard Street and dealing with the stop sign at the top, if memory serves. Long ago there was a movie camera on Lombard Street and the worst (best?) entertaining clips were shown on TV’s Tonite Show every so often.

  3. Anyone remember Doug Domokos the Wheelie King? Here is a video on YouTube with Doug on Lombard Street
