Sad News on the Salt

Word from the American Motorcyclist Association is that Cliff Gullett from Bozeman, Montana was killed in an accident on the Bonneville Salt Flats on September 3rd. Gullett was racing in the 500 cc Streamliner class when the accident occurred. This is the week for racing at the Land Speed Facility on the famous Salt Flats. Mr. Gullett was 47 years of age. We at IronWorks magazine and IW Blogger extend our sympathy to his family and friends.

  1. My condolences to his family.

  2. It saddens us all to hear of his passing.

  3. Just the day before this I’d heard of some young ladies who were setting records on the salt – it sounded like speed week was going well. Then this sad news.
    My sympathies to Cliff’s family.

  4. That’s so sad.
Did he have a family? Any kids?
I will pray for Gullett family.

  5. From what I know of Cliff, he was a good man. He will surely be missed. God speed man!

  6. I read this and more at http://www.theunion.com

“We had dinner the night before,” said Robinson, a Grass Valley driver with the Ack Attack team trying to top the motorcycle world land speed record this week. “He had just crossed the measured mile, so they know he was going 237 miles per hour … His tire came apart and he got some air underneath that lifted him and he tumbled real violently.”

“He was a great guy. You know, these things happen sometimes. It’s just terrible. I’d never seen anything like that happen before. With any kind of high-speed racing, though, you make it as safe as you can, you use the experience and knowledge you have and you just give it your best shot.”

  7. Paul Holdsworth & I checked in at the gate just after the tragic accident occurred. Cliff’s whole family was there. The accident cast a sad pall over the event. Many records fell. Although he did not set a record, Iron Works Rider Paul made his first pass on an M2 sponsored by the Buell Brothers Racing Team !

  8. MY DAD WAS BEST FRIENDS WITH CLIFF AND GOOD FAMILY FRIEND TO US. I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER CAMPING AND RIDING WITH CLIFF AND HIS FAMILY. I HEARD FROM MY MOTHER THAT HAS TALKED TO CLIFFS WIFE THAT HE WAS GOING 239 MPH!! MY MOM SAID HE WENT FASTER THAT HIS LAST RECORD. BUT THAT DOESNT MATTER WHAT MATTER IS THAT HE DIED DOING WHAT HE LOVED AND WE AND ESPECIALLY HIS FAMILY WILL MISS HIM!!

  9. Damn.

Rest in Peace, Cliff, Rest in Peace.

  10. Here is a photograph of Cliff’s last pass. I was there shooting the event.
